PIONEER NAVIGATOR
MEMORIAL At PATEA THE AOTEA MIGRATION [by telegraph OWN correspondent] HAWKRA, Monday Possessing unique characteristics in design, whicli are both beautiful and striking, the memorial at Patea in front of the municipal buildings to the famous Polynesian navigator Turi will shortly be an accomplished fact. Turi settled at Patea after the 1300mile voyage in tb.e war canoe Aotea and fortified the headland to the south of the Patea""River. Descendants of the Aotea migration still reside in the district.
Six ornamental pillars of concrete and fac<id with boulders, supporting a canoa 55ft. long and sft. wide, will comprise the memorial to the navigator and davs that are gone. The. details of the canoe's construction and decoration and symbols will be historically correct. It is fitting that shingle, should come from Patea Beach and that karaka trees should be chosen to provide a softening background.
