HARRIER RACING
GROWTH IN MEMBERSHIP « ■ S COOPER'S FINE PERFORMANCES CHAMPIONSHIP DATES FIXED The .report presented to the annual meeting of the Auckland District Harrier Subcommittee last evening stated that the most, outstanding feature of the past season had been the remarkable growth in membership of the various harrier clubs of the province, it being estimated that no fewer than seventy new men had joined up, bringing the total membership of the harrier clubs in Auckland to approximately 200. This marked a decidedly healthy tendency in the youth of the province, as the movement may be considered still in its infancy. One new club, Te Kuiti, was affiliated, bringing tho total number of clubs to eight. The Onehunga-to-Auckland race was won by N. F. Cooper, while the Technical Old Boys' Club ■ won the teams race. This club also won the Auckland clubs' teams race at Avondale. One hundred competitors lined up and Cooper again showed his superiority by winning individual honours in convincing style. The Auckland provincial championship was run over the previous year's New Zealand championship course of 10,000 metres. Fifty harriers, including several from Hamilton, took part in the gruelling test. Cooper won the individual race by a big margin and the teams race once more went to Technical. The absence of J. W. Savidan, the New Zealand titleholder, at the Olympic Games, was a big loss to the Auckland team which represented the province) at the New Zealand cross-country championship at. Christchurch. The winner was J. G. Barne3, of Otago, which won the championship. Cooper finished Becond and the Auckland team fo.urth. The following executive committee was appointed:—Chairman. Mr. G. Chambers; honorary secretary. M l '. L. C. Barker: committee. Messrs. G. Gilchrist. J. P. Dolan, H. T. J. McNiel, A. Drummcnd, F. Farland.
