ATHLETIC CARNIVAL

ANNUAL PRIMARY SPORTS SEVERAL RECORDS BROKEN KEEN CONTESTS FOR SHIELDS The annual sports meeting of the Auckland Primary Schools' Amateur Athletic Association was held at the Domain 011 Ihursday in delightful weather. The entries constituted a record, no fewer than 7615 pupils representing city and suburban schools taking part. There was a large attendance of parents and of the general public, who thoroughly enjoyed, not only the foot racing and hall games, but the massed displays which were a feature of the afternoon's portion of the programme. No fewer than seven records were broken, while 11 were equalled. The shield for the boys' events was won by Papatoetoe after a most exciting contest with Owairaka. Up to the running of the last race, the 100 yards hurdles, open, Owairaka was in the load, but Papatoetoe's representatives claimed the first three places in this event and thus gained the shield. The contest for the girl's shield was even closer than that for the boys, Westmere finishing a mere half point ahead of Otahuhu. Following were the points gained by the leading teams in each section: — Boys' Events. —Papatoetoe, 121, 1; Owairaka, 116, 2; Cornwall Park, 105, ;3; King's School, 62.}, 4. Girls' Events. —Westmere, 57i, 1; Otahuhu, 57, 2; Owairaka, 44, 3; Cornwall Park, 40, 4. The performance of the Owairaka pupils was commendable in \*iew of the fact that, besides being one of the smaller schools, it is one that has not been established long enough to hold a tradition in the playing fields. Its position of second in the boys' shield competition and third in that for girls, therefore, against much larger schools was particularly creditable.' Meritorious Performance One of the most meritorious performances was registered by the Northcote senior overhead ball team. In its heat this team recorded 2m 18 4-ss, which was 7 l-5s lower than the existing record. The team's performance in the final was better still, the time being 2m 15 3-ss, which will probably stand for some years. Among the interested spectators at the sports were Dr. J. W. Mcllraith, chief inspector for the Auckland education district, together with several other inspectors, Mr. D. M. ltae, principal of the Auckland Training College, and Mr. F. C. Lopdell, vice-principal, and representatives of other educational organisations.
