EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD SENTENCE OF DEATH PASSED The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of April 16, 1883: Joe Brady, the most active of the band of men who murdered Lord Cavendish and Mr. Burke, has been found guilty and sentenced to death. The jury, we are told, returned their verdict promptly. There can be no hope for him, for the crime committed was one of the blackest and most cruel in the annals of villainy. It is announced that the Queen will leave Windsor Castle for Osborne on Tuesday ne*t. Owing to the recent activity of the Fenians in England, extreme precautions have been taken by the police to prevent any attack being made upon Her Majesty. Information has been received in Sydney that the Queensland Government lias taken formal possession of New Guinea and hoisted the Union Jack there. The tenders now called for by the Public Works Office for the Waihou portion of the Thames-Waikato railway will provide for the formation of the line from opposite Te Aroha to Morrinsville, thus completing the connection with the Auckland and Waikato line. . Certain portions ot native land > in the Hukerenui and Kawakawa survey district have been taken for the Great North Road and portions of native laiKl in the counties of Rodney and " ®ite mata have been taken for the West Coast road.
