SOAP-SUDS FOR FIRE

The Edinburgh Fire Brignde now uses " soap-suds " to put out fires. Its airfoam pump is the first of its kind in Great Britain. " When fighting oil and petrol fires in the past," tho Chief Firemaster, Mr. Peter Mothven, says, " we always experienced great difficulty, because water just carried the flames further, and in many cases we could not approach the fire with hand extinguishers. Now, with the air-foam pump we can spray strong jets of soap-suds, which cling to the walls and floors and smother the flames immediately." A comparatively small quantity of water is required with the pump, an advantage where water is scarce.
