BOROUGH HALF-HOLIDAYS

POSITION AT TAURANGA OPPOSITION TO CHANGE [from our own correspondent] TAURANGA, Wednesday A large number of business men attended a special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last evening and debated the question of the half-holiday, which is at present observed on Wednesday. ,lt was reported by the secretary, Mr. B. C. Robbins, who is also the Mayor, that a requisition had been presented to the Borough Council the previous evening asking that a poll to define the day for the statutory half-holiday be taken. A recommendation was submitted to the meeting by the executive committee of the chamber that, in view of the unsettled conditions of commerce and trade generally, the time was not opportune to make any change in the day. After considerable discussion, the recommendation was adopted. PROPOSAL AT GISBORNE RETAILERS NOT IN FAVOUR [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] GISBORNE, Wednesday By a substantial majority a meeting of Gisborne retailers decided to contest to the best of its powers the proposal to change the weekly early closing day from Thursday to Saturday. A section of those who attended the meeting favoured a change, but the general opinion was almost unanimously in favour of retaining the present halfday.
