WINTER RELIEF

Ready and generous support of the Governor-General's Winter Relief Fund will, unquestionably, be forthcoming. The fact that His Excellency and the Lady Bledisloe, who have exceptional opportunities of gauging the need for supplementing the assistance of the unemployed in the coming winter, have issued a national appeal for contributions in money or in kind, ensures a substantial response. No matter how restricted are the resources of the great majority of the people privation to the point of actual want will not be permitted. Much philanthropic work is being done. In the past two winters a special effort has been made by many organisations, resulting in the distribution of a great deal of food, clothing and fuel. Their Excellencies' appeal, however, will inspire giving on a more comprehensive scale and in a more consistent manner. From Government House, where the headquarters of the fund will be established, allocations will be made to the various districts according to their degree of necessity and the existing agencies which will be employed to distribute the goods in the urban areas will be charged with the responsibility of seeing that they reach the deserving and that there is no overlapping. The spirit behind the appeal is that of the good neighbour, and the good that it will do will not be limited to the relief of bodily want. Many a discouraged heart will warm at the knowledge that Their Excellencies are so deeply concerned for the comfort and wellbeing of everyone who is suffering privation through no fault of his own. Their practical sympathy will act like a ray of sunshine in many a gloomy home. Affairs of State are pressing, but His Excellency does not forget the unfortunate and finds time to organise a scheme of systematic help. New Zealand is grateful for his practical lead in a noble cause.
