"MANNISH" TENDENCY

DRESSES OF FILM ACTRESSES DEPRECATION BY DIRECTOR Viewing with alarm the mannish tendency among prominent feminine stars, Jesse L. Lasky, pioneer Fox Films producer, recently circularised motion picture executives, asking them to unite with him in a movement to squelch Hollywood's trousers-wearing craze. In his letter to other producers Lasky stressed the " immeasurable harm that is being done the industry by stars who forget they arc women and openly parade in men's attire." " For myself," Lasky wrote, " I will continuo to engage for my pictures only those actresses who retain their feminine charm, regardless of how widespread the trousers vogue may grow."

The Fox producer pleaded against lax handling of the situation. " If persisted in, this vogue will destroy the very foundation upon which all motion picture drama is based—the retention of womanly attractiveness and charm." Lasky stated that ho had changed the story of " The Warrior's Husband," which ho is now making, to point the finger of ridicule at the trousers vogue. The picture, featuring Elissa Landi, Ernest Truex and Marjorie Pam beau, tells the story of Amazon women who take the place of men, ruling them with an iron hand.
