ENGLISH PRINTED LINENS

SHEEP IN DESIGN . One of the good things that tariffs have done .is to give impteus to the making of modern and lovely furnishing materials in England. Printed linens, for instance ? which at one time came along exclusively from foreign countries, are now made—and made to admiration ! —in England. A certain linen resembles some of the modern' Swedish designs for hangings.

It has an attractive scrolled pattern printed in maroon on tho natural linen. Among the scrolls are flocks of sheep grazingr—not such obviously sheep-y sheep as to impinge on your senses as sheep the first moment you look at them..

No, they fit so well into the rhythm tof the pattern that at first you notice them only as an essential part of that pattern. Then yoti notice that, detached from the pattern, they have a significance and a life of their own; you can almost imagine them to be moving across the linen from convolution to ■convolution of the maroon pattern, grazing as .they go. Sheep are also found grazing like this on a rug designed by a Swedish woman i —sheep not primarily presented as sheep, but as part of the design that patterned the rug. Other linens printed in soft bluegreens and greens, yellows, blacks, and greys would, according to the exigencies of your colour-scheme, make charming purtains or bedspreads, or, since cushions <af patterned or embroidered linens are popular, they would be ideal for ■covering cushions.
