NELSON ORCHARDS
j APPLE EXPORT SEASON To date 464,897 cases of fruit have been exported from Nelson, compared with 442,585 for tho same period last year. The latest overseas vessel to load hero was the Karamea, which took on board 34,000 cases—2o,ooo for Glasgow and 14,000 for Liverpool. The varieties comprised Jonathans," Delicious, Statesman and Stunners. The Port Frcmantle is the next steamer to load hero and will tako 50,000 cases for London. Alarm is expressed in the Tnsman district at tho 15 per cent reduction im large-size fruit for tho United Kingdom, If adhered to, a largo proportion of tho Sturmer crop will bo shut out from export, probably leading to a glut on tho Dominion markets. Representations have been made to the Control Board to have the percentage increased, but so far no reply has been received. An orchardist was charged with forwarding for export six eases of apples which were noticeably at variance with the description on the cases. It was stated that the regulations allowed for 270 apples per case in tho variety (Cox's Orange), and that the cases sent down contained 288, being under 2in. dia- I meter, 'whereas the regulations provided for a minimum of 2Jin. Twentyseven per cent of the consignment was said to be under normal size. s It was explained that tho defendant had nothing to do with tho orchard from which the apples came, it being run by her son. The magistrate said this was unfortunate, but he must treat the-fhatter seriously. A fine of £5 was imposed.
