WRONG USE OF INITIALS
ACCOUNTANCY PROFESSION SUCCESSFUL "PROSECUTION "I have very little sympathy for anyone who, uses letters to which he is not entitled after his name," said Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, when S. V. Aston (Mr. Huband) was prosecuted by the secretary of the New Zealand Society of Accountants (Mr. B. Elliot). It was alleged that defendant had used the letters "A.P.A.N.Z." in connection with his business when he was not a member of the Society of Accountants. Mr. Elliot produced a newspaper advertisement in which the initials appeared after defendant's name. It was stated defendant had not been an associate of the society since 11)27, his subscription having lapsed. For defendant, Mr. Huband said there was no evidence that the letters were used in connection with defendant's business, and it had not been shown that the advertisement was published with defendant's knowledge or authority. "From the advertisement, it appears that defendant was not in practice as an accountant, but was a tutor in accountancy," the magistrate commented. "The inference is that the business college which employed defendant engaged an accountant as a tutor." Counsel said defendant had earned the qualification. His certificate had not been recalled by the society, and no one had suffered harm through the offence. Defendant had other qualifications which were at least as high as membership of the society. A fine of £4 was imposed.
