AUCKLAND ROTARY CLUB

THE NEXT PRESIDENT MR. S. J. HARBUTT SELECTED An announcement that Mr. S. J. Harbutt will bo the next president of tho Auckland Rotary Club was made at tho club's luncheon yesterday. Tho president, Mr. T. U. Wells, intimated that tho vice-president, Mr. H. Horton, who was to have been nominated as president for tho ensuing year, would leave for England next week. Subject to tho approval of the nomination coinmittoo, Mr. Harbutt would take the presidential chair as soon as it became vacant. Mr. Wells thanked Mr. Horton, on behalf of tho directors, for his valuable and able advice and for tho interest he had taken in tho club's welfare. It was proposed that he should retain tho position of vice-president and be granted leave of absence for tho remainder of tho year. In* acknowledging the president's remarks, Mr. Horton said ho would bo pleased to convey the club's good wishes to Rotary clubs abroad. Reference to tho high esteem in which tho late Mr. Charles Rhodes, former president of tho club, was held overseas was made by Mr. G. David Larson, trade counsellor of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Honolulu Rotary Club, who was the speaker for tho day. lie recalled that when arrangements wore being mado to hold the Pacific Rotary Convention at Honolulu tho Honolulu Rotary Club received an encouraging letter from Mr. Rhodes, together with a, substantial contribution. It was with .profound regret that the Honolulu club heard of his death. Mr. Larson's address was on Rotary and world problems. Visitors included Mr. G. A. Woods, of London. Mr. J. Fairioy, of Geelong, Victoria, Mr. G. F. Grahamc, Mayor of Suva, Mr. W. P. Walker and Mr. D. W. Barker, of Wellington, and Mr. A. Stoneham and Mr. N. D. Humphrey, of Gisborne.
