THE CARPET PROBLEM
PLAIN OR FLOWERED > If a carpet is to be bought, spend time on it. Choose one in attractive colouring —not in hard, bright colouring—and with a quiet pattern. This is a good rule to follow whether the carpet is expensive or inexpensive, but a specially good rule with an inexpensive cai-pet. Some experts on interior decoration contend that if the curtains are flowered, the carpet should be plain, bat if the carpet is patterned then the curtains should be plain. It is possible to have both patterned or both plain, but where both are patterned it is essential to avoid vivid, large patterns, and, of course, the carpet must be chosen with a piece of the curtain material —and a fair sized piece—as a guide. Plain carpets are very, very nice, but they are expensive. If, however, £lO (o £ls is to be spent on the floor covering, then choose a plain carpet. Instead of a carpet, rugs may be used on the floor, and it may be either of stained wood or covered with linoleum. If linoleum is to be used choose it with (he very greatest care. Linoleum often spoils a room, but if it is essential, then choose a plain linoleum for preference, or with a small pattern. Felt makes a very good all-over floor covering, and can bs had in most delightful colours; it runs
into fair expense, for it costs about £8 to completely cover the average-sized room with felt, but the effect is charming. If a plain wooden floor is chosen, small rugs can be used. These can be bought inexpensively, while it is still less expensive to use hand-made rag rugs. Felt can also be used for rugs if the ends are bound. Sometimes the ends are cut into a fringe in about inch to two-inch width strips. Matting can give quite a nice effect if it is essential that the floor covering be inexpensive.
