OBITUARY

FORMER TEST CRICKETER LONDON, March 28 The death occurred suddenly at Exmouth, of Mr. Lionel C. H. Palairet, a former test match cricketer, aged 63. Mr. It. C. N. Palairet, joint-manager of the M.C.C. team at present in New Zealand, is a brother of deceased. Mr. Palairet first came into prominence as a cricketer when he captained the Repton eleven in 1888-89. Going to Oxford University ho played against Cambridge from 1890 to 1893 and was captain of the Oxford team in the 1892-93 season. He played for Shrewsbury's English eleven against the Australians at Nottingham in 1893, for C. I. Thornton's English eleven against Australia in 1896, and for England against Australia in the test matches at Manchester and the Oval in 1902. He was one of Somerset's leading players over a long period of years. With H. T. Hewett he madfj a record score of 346 in first-class cricket against Yorkshire at Taunton in 1892. Representing Oxford University in the athletic field lie raced against Cambridge in the threo miles event in 1892.
