BRYANT LAND SCHEME

The Auckland Savings Bank has extended for a few days the period in which the Waikaio Land Settlement Society may qualify for its gift of £IO,OOO. A like sum must be raised and there would have been no doubt on that score had the difficulties of many contributors not become burdensome during recent months. Numbers of them have found it impossible to give to the extent of their promises. Thus others will have to come to the aid of the society to enable it to secure the handsome donation of the Auckland Savings Bank. As to the merits of the scheme little need be said. It was launched by Mr. D. V. Bryant, of Hamilton, purely in the public interest. His aim is to place on the land reliel workers who prove their capacity as farmers. A double service will be rendered to the community: land that is not being fully developed will be secured and men who otherwise would have to depend upon the taxation of their fellows will after due trial be placed upon it. Actually it is a private contribution to tho small farm scheme, but one which, under the highly-competent supervision that has been secured, may become much more valuable to the community. The public has the assurance that the scheme will be run solely in the public interest. Under the management of Mr. Bryant and his associates there is no possibility of bad bargains being unloaded upon it. Contributors may rest assured that in every respect the scheme will be carried out for the common good. Thus the appeal for the necessary funds can bo supported without the slightest reservation. Those who are in the position to make good the deficit may do much more good than a first view would indicate. It is possible for this society when once properly launched to continue its work for a very long period. Its usefulness will expand with its achievements and those who provide its financial foundation will see results for many years to come.
