MORAL BEHIND SALE STATE VENTURE CONDEMNED LONDON. March 22 The Daily Telegraph says the moral behind the sale of the Commonwealth Line's ships is that Socialistic State ventures in commercial competitive trading are bound to end in financial disaster. The sum of £10,000,000 would he a conservative estimate of the lino's cost to the Australian taxpayer during its chequered history. "Running steamers at a dead loss in order to gratify national sentiment and keep officials and members of maritime unions in clover may win votes for the time, but can never pay," says the Jelegraph. The Financial Times snys the sale should be' welcomed from every standpoint. It marks the end of a form of competition which had bad effects all round. In future Australia will be served efficiently by services freed from artificial ■working conditions, which imposed uneconomic conditions upon all tonnage.
