KIRK-WINDEYER CUP NO MATCHES THIS YEAR [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Thursday The Kirk-Windeyer Cup position is more definite than was expressed in the recent cabled Press Association message, and apparently there will be no competition for the trophy this year. Mr. Sutton, secretary of the New Zealand Golf Council, has received the following cable advice from Australia: — "Unable to obtain representative team, and obliged to postpone until next year, the venue to remain in New Zealand."
Great disappointment was expressed in Auckland golfing circles yesterday when it was learned that New South Wales had decided not to send a team. It was known that difficulty had arisen for that State to send the best team pwing to the inability of Bettington, Ferrier and Mackay to make the trip. However, it is felt in Auckland that Sydney alone, with its wealth of golfing talent, could send four players capable of defending the cup. All arrangements were made for the contest to be played on the Auckland Golf Club's Middlemore course, and it is hoped that the New South Wales Association will reconsider the matter.
The Kirk-Windeyer Cup is played for between representatives of New Zealand and any Australian State. New South Wales is the present holder of the trophy.
