GAMING ACT CHARGES
SALOON PROPRIETOR FINED
BETS LAID WITH CONSTABLE

HAWERA, Thursday
A billiard saloon proprietor, Herbert Allen, yesterday pleaded guilty to charges of keeping a common gaming house and carrying on the business of a bookmaker. It was stated that a constable in plain clothes had visited the premises on three occasions and laid bets.
The magistrate entered a conviction on both charges, and on the bookmaking charge imposed a fine of £75. It was stated that in 1929 Allen had been similarly convicted and fined £SO.
RAIDS AT MORRINSVILLE
TWO MEN BEFORE COURT

MORRINSVILLE, Thursday
The police raided premises in Morrinsvillo yesterday and two men appeared in Court before a justice of the peace later in the afternoon. Stephen Joseph Bain, whose billiard room was visited by Sergeant Anniss, of Hamilton, and Constable Hodge, of Morrinsville, was charged with carrying on business as a bookmaker, and James Henry Bain, whose mercer's shop was visited by Constables Saunders and Nalder, of Hamilton, was charged with keeping a common gaming house. Both accused wore j-emanded to appear at Morrinsville on April 20, bail of £IOO being allowed in each case.
