PATHOLOGICAL CADET
HOSPITAL APPOINTMENT MANY FINE APPLICANTS A sidelight on the extent of unemployment among boys just leaving secondary schools was provided at a meeting of the Auckland Hospital Board yesterday when applications for the position of cadet in the pathological department were being considered. A total of 188 applications had been received for the post, and the chairman, Mr. W, Wallace, said the standard of applicants was so high that only with great difficulty had the number been reduced to 14 for the making of a final selection. The boys were admitted to the board room in turn for interrogation and all impressed by their academic qualifications and their general presence. Mr. Mervyn Gatinan was finally selected to fill the position, Mr. Wallace stating that in one respect he had regretted the large number of highly-qualified young men available for the post. Under happier economic conditions, these young students Avould have had the choice of a number of promising positions. On behalf of the board, lie wished the unsuccessful applicants success iti tlieir future efforts to gain a footing in their chosen careers;
