DEATH OF LORD LOVAT
CAREER IN THE ARMY EMPIRE FORESTRY EXPERT 0 tßeceived February 19. fi.35 p.m.) LONDON. Feb. 19 The death has occurred of Lord Lovat, formerly Parliamentary Under-Secretary for the Dominions. Simon Joseph Fraser, Lord Lovat, chief of the Fraser clan and the 14th baron of a famous Jacobite line, was born in November, 1871. A Roman Catholic, he received his early education at Fort Augustus Abbey on the Caledonian Canal. He succeeded to the title at the age of 16, while he was at Oxford. For three years he held a commission in the Ist Life Guaixls. Then for the South African war he raised Lovat's Scouts, which he commanded himself. On his return lie raised two Yeomanry regiments, which formed part of the Highland Mounted Brigade, which he led until his retirement in 1913 with the rank of colonel. During the Great War Lord Lovat served in Gallipoli, France and Flanders and was awarded the K.C.M.G. Later in the campaign he acted as Director of Forestry with the rank of brigadier-, general. In that post he displayed great ability, as he had for years carried out afforestation work at great expense on his Inverness-shire and other Highland estates. Thanks to his foresight, he was able to make a valuable contribution of timber to the nation's needs during the war. Promoted "major-general in 1919, he was appointed chairman of the Forestry Commission and also presided over the Empire Forestry Conference. In 1926-29 he was Parliamentary UnderSecretary of the Dominions Office and chairman of the Overseas Settlement Committee in succession to the Earl of Clarendon. In that capacity he visited Auckland in October, 1928.' In 1910 he married a daughter of the fourth Lord Ribblesdale. Ilis seat is Beauly Castle and he owned about 182,000 acres in Scotland. The heir to the barony is Lieutenant Simon Christopher Fraser, Master of Lovat, who was born in July, 1911. He is an officer of the Scots Guards. ____________
