ROWING CONTESTS

PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS JUNIOR FOUR'S SUCCESSES •MISFORTUNES OF HAMILTON Thirty-seven crews were engaged on Saturday afternoon in battling for the honour of being provincial champions in their respective classes on the stretch of water fronting the Tamaki Drive. A record attendance of the public and oarsmen watched from the roadway stirring finishes, while' many followed the entire races from cars, which are able to keep within easy reach of the participants. The water could hardly have been bettered and the overhead conditions made the day very pleasant. During the early part of the afternoon there was a slight jobble on the surface down the harbour from the eastern gap, but the final races were rowed in a flat calm. There were a few surprises for the onlookers, the principal one being the misfortune of the Hamilton eight and senior four crews. In the final of the provincial eight-oar championship against St. George's the crew had to stop rowing for fear of tho boat swamping, while in the senior fours N. Pope, the stroke of Hamilton's champion combination, collapsed from muscle trouble in the back when tho boat was leading. The oarsman was taken aboard a launch immediately. Chief honours of the day went to the Auckland four; which won both the senior and junior provincial championships. This fine record is a climax in the career of a really splendid crew, which already has gained more than a fair share of wins in past seasons. The v four is: S. Scott (stroke), 0. Chamberlain (3), J. McComish (2), R. Porter (bow). The officials were:—Starter, Mr. S. H. Buchanan (Hamilton); umpire, Mr. P. R. Grahame; judges, Messrs. H. W. Hudson, G. R. Hogan, J. R. Foster, A. C. Norden, C. H. St. George's went away again, and Hamilton, which seemed rather heavy and less trim than the Auoklanders, retired some distance later with a danger of the eight swamping. Hamilton went away at the start fairly t level with Auckland, which had inside position. Auckland. followed by Waitemata, took a line closer inshore than the rest of the field, which went between the steamers moored in the stream. Hamilton was leading this section, with West End and St. George s very close together, when N. Pope, stroke of Hamilton and All Black oar. collapsed. The oarsman was picked up by the starter s launch, the crew retiring. At this stage Auckland had a lead which the crew held to the post.
