LIABILITY FOR RATES
POSITION OF THE CROWN COUNTY COUNCIL'S PROTEST [by TELEGRAPH—OWN CORHEsrONDENT] GISBORNE, Wednesday Hardship created by the refusal of the Crown* to pay county rates was revealed at a meeting yesterday of the Waikohu County Council, when it was stated that tho department's altitude would result in tho Crown's liability having to be shouldered by only two other ratepayers, the three properties concerned having comprised a special rating area. The Crown's interest in the matter resulted through the leasehold of tho property having reverted to it. The Commissioner of Crown Lands, in a letter to tho council, contended that tho Crown was only liablo for special rates which were levied before the Crown acquired its interest. Tho question of liability for. general rates could only be raised in connection with freehold lands which were hold subject to mortgage or lease from tho Crown. The clerk reported that the amount involved was £33 15s, which would have to be paid by two other ratepayers in tho special area. The council decided to bring tho matter under tho notice of tho Minister in tho form of a protest.
