A HOT DRINK

An old-fashioned remedy that is still of value for a feverish cold is the hot drink taken at bedtime. It dilates the blood-vessels and makes the patient perspire, thus helping to bring down the temperature. Perspiration washes away waste products and takes the strain from other excretory organs. The kind of drink makes-little difference; it is the heat produced that matters. Some people prefer sweetened drinks, and the added sugar acts as a mild stimulant. A simple drink is made by squeezing a lemon into a tumblerful of hot water and sweetening with sugar; but you can use oranges or other fruit. Hot milk has much the same effect. Boiled onions have long enjoyed a reputation for. curing colds, but their action is probably the same as that of the hot drink.
