REDUCED HOURS OF WORK
Sir, —l claim th.it a reduction of working hours to 30 hours a week would he a more progressive method of combating unemployment than any adjustment of moneyed application. Surely here we have a perfect community for the adoption of such a plan. Little calculation is required to ascertain that the present unemployed 70,000, when employed, will spend £7,000,(XX) per annum. The greater use of machinery and the greater employment of womenfolk justifies a reduction in the working hours, which will in turn ensure the employment of that section of the community at present being supported by the working individual. Such adoption gives the people as a whole greater freedom and leisure, which will go hand in hand with the development of new ideas and interests, resulting in greater and widespread consumption. Prices will be raised internally, to the joy of the economist. Employment.
