CLERK STEALS £970
TRANSPORT BOARD FUNDS A PLEA FOR LENIENCY JUDGE DEFERS SENTENCE Having pleaded guilty to 10 charges of thefts amounting to £970 from the Auckland Transport Board, William George Norman Hutchison, clerk,, aged 28 (Mr. Matthews), appeared for sentence in the Supreme Court yesterday before Mr. Justice Herdman. Mr. Matthews said that Hutchison had given information against himself before any suspicion had been aroused. His superior officer with the Transport Board had been authorised to bear testimony to his excellent service and character. His Honor: He stole over £9OO and refused to give any account of it. Mr. Matthews said he had given every assistance to the police and officers making inquiry. Counsel read letters on accused's behalf. His devotion to his family had been mainly responsible for the strain that brought about his downfall. On Mr. Matthews stating that he wished to call evidence His Honor adjourned the case until Tuesday. Bail was refused.
