WHANGAREI BOROUGH
AID FOR EX-SOLDIERS
[from our own correspondent]
WHANGAREI, Tuesday
The question of 10 per cent penalty on unpaid rates came before the Whangarei Borough Council last evening in a report from tho town clerk. It was pointed out in the report that tho clause in the Finance Act, 1931, giving local bodies authority to remit the penalty had not so far been reen;H'."il. The report did not recommend the [.ostponement of the penalty, which becomes due after tho end of this month.
A motion that tho report be received was carried after an amendment that it he referred to the special meeting of the Finance Committee had been defeated.
A letter was received from the Empire Ex-Servico Association stating it had received a further grant of £SO to be spent for the benefit of returned soldiers in the district, and asking that the amount be subsidised pound for pound by the council, the men concerned to be employed on borough works. The council unanimously agreed to grant the request of the association.
