GERMAN CHANGES

HERR HITLER'S POSITION POSSIBILITIES UNCERTAIN BERLIN, Jan. 29 General von Schleicher, -who has resigned the Chancellorship, presented the President. Marshal von Hindenburg, with three possibilities. Firstly, a Government, supported by a majority in the Reichstag, involving the appointment of Herr Hitler to the Chancellorship. Secondly, a minority Government resting on a "broad stream of popular support" under Herr Hitler, with toleration of the Right.

Thirdly, a Presidential Cabinet vested with extraordinary powers. The President asked General von Schleicher to await the assembling of the Reichstag on January 31, but General von Schleicher refused and resigned.

Herr von Papen, the former Chancellor, is acting on behalf of the President in an endeavour to discover the political possibilities, but he is not forming a Cabinet.

Discussions between the Nazis and Nationalists have not yielded a compromise. The Centre Party is keeping aloof meanwhile, but the prospect of a von Papen Cabinet, with dictatorial powers, is alarming the Republicans. NATION ALARMED

HO The Berlin correspondent of the Daily Mai! states that the opinion is growing that the Nationalists' negotiations for the formation of a Parliamentary Government will fail, forcing President von Hindenburg either to break with the Constitution or to resign in favour of Herr Hitler or the ex-Crown Prince. The newspapers declare that a clique of landowners lias overthipwn General von Schleicher and js now planning a dictatorship.
