LARGE HOLIDAY CROWDS

I POPULAR BEACHES AND PARKS MANY SPORTING ATTRACTIONS Thousands of -Aueklanders celebrated Anniversary Day in the open air yesterday. Jn spite of a clouded sky the weather was fine and crowds of people flocked to near by resorts or attended the many sporting and athletic events. The great aquatic carnival of the day was the Auckland Anniversary Regatta, the activity 011 the harbour and the gay decoration 011 the ships making the holiday a memorable one. Apart from the yachts taking part in the regatta, the harbour traffic was unusually heavy, special excursion boats and ferry steamers being run to cope with the holiday crowds. Thousands of racegoers were carried to the Takapuna. Jockey Club's meeting and many more passengers were bent 011 picnicking and bathing on the. numerous beaches around the North Shore.

Excursion boats carried full complements of passengers to the islands and beach resorts in the Hauraki Gulf, and there was a steiyly stream of motor-bus traffic conveying people along tho waterfront road to the beaches 011 tho eastern side of the city. Private motoring parties helped to swell tho traffic on the roads, while others unable to go far afield niado use of tho tramway system to carry them to the popular beaches and parks nearer the citv.

Conditions were ideal for the sporting and athletic events, which included tho Auckland provincial tennis championships at Stanley Street and the Maungakiekie Golf Club's anniversary championship and handicap tournament at One Tree Hill. Inter-club bowling matches took place on the various club greens and cricket enthusiasts were catered for by senior matches at Eden Park and Devonport. The New Zealand Tourist Trophy race for motor-cyclists attracted many visitors to Waiheko Island, while the Auckland Rifle Association's championships were fired at the Penrose rifle range.
