SUBURBAN MATCHES

SECOND ROUND COMMENCED SMALL SCORES REGISTERED GOOD BOWLING BY CHEESEMAN The Auckland City and Suburban Cricket Association commenced the second round of its senior grade competition at the Domain on Saturday. Conditions were excellent", but there was low scoring by the teams batting first. The surprise of the scries came from Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys, who compiled 193 in their first innings against R.V., the grade leaders. The colts are likely to make it an interesting finish. R.V. scored 16 without loss. In the principal game Ponsonby failed badly against Harbour Board which dismissed its rivals for 118. Harbour Board is in a sound position, having scored 100 for the loss of two wickets. Invicta was dismissed for 101 in its first innings against Green Lane, which had lost four wickets for 108 at stumps. No. 2 wicket at the Domain again proved unreliable, and, when Ponsonby won tho toss against Harbour Board, a big score was expected. The bowlers, however, met with surprising success, and at one stage Ponsonby had lost four wickets for 20. Cheesernan showed surprising pace off the pitch, and this fact assisted him. He clean bowled Lonergan and had Viscoc caught for 10. Much interest was centred round tho appearance of T. Lyon, who formerly played prominently for Y.M.C.A. in tho Auckland Association's competition. A beautiful ball from Cheesernan clean bowled Lyon before he had scored. Bowler's Good Average In the next over Cheesernan met with more success, bowling Masters, and his average was five for 24. Lines, 24, and Robertshaw, 35, both played valuable innings. Innes scored with nice; drives past mid-oil, while Robertshaw hit freely and secured four boundaries. Broberg, 24, also played a good innings. His score included throe fours. Ponsonby was dismissed soon after the tea adjournment for 118.

Cheeseman, who was responsible for Harbour Board's successful attack, secured six wickets for 40 in 11 overs. Martin, two for 12, also bowled well. A splendid display by R. Stallworthy was a feature of Harbour Board's first innings, which yielded 100 for the loss of two wickets. Stallworthy showed a variety of strokes, being particularly good on the off side. His scoro included six fours. Wetherill, 18 not out, also batted well. Harbour Board should have little difficulty in getting four more championship points. Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys caused tho surprise of tlio day by scoring 193 against R.V. After bis success in tho first round, many expected Finlayson would go through Mount Albert's batsmen. The colts, however, played Finlayson with confidence, and he proved an expensive bowler. There were several splendid individual efforts by Mount Albert. Sound Partnership Butler, 42, and Iv. Cantlay. 43, were associated in a sound partnership which tested tho bowling. Butler played delightful cricket and was an inspiration to his youthful partner. The Mount Albert captain was dismissed by a brilliant one-hand catch by Finlayson. I. J. Cantlay carried on with his brother and runs came fast. Both played perfect cricket and their running between tho wickets was an object lesson to older cricketers. A change of bowling saw Simpson get K. C'antlay in his first over. Burton bowled I. J. Cantlay for 44, which included five fours. His display gained him a round of applause. Hebden, 16, batted nicelv before the team was dismissed for 193.

Simpson was the most successful bowler. In two overs ho secured threo wickets for two. R.V. scored 16 without loss.

Invicta failed badly against Green Lane, Kerr again having a successful day with tho ball. The veteran secured 6even wickets for 53. With the exception of Rimmer, 35 not out, and Morman, 24, tho others knew little of how to play Kerr's bowling. Rimmer was particularly careful, and scored mosty with well-placed singles. Green Lane is already in a good position, having scored 108 for the loss of four wickets. Lonergan, 42 not out, batted nicely for Green Lane, and may get his century. Kerr, 15 not out, and Gedye, 18, also batted well. PONSONBY'S SMALL SCORE SIX WICKETS FOR GHEESEMAN Cheeseman, a fast bowler, was ill good form for Harbour Board against Ponsonby, which lost its best batsmen" cheaply. '1 lie wicket was in splendid order, but Cheeseman was on top throughout and Ponsonby made only 118. A good stand by Innes, 24, and Robertsha.w, 3b, saved Ponsonby from disaster. Cheeseman took six wickets for 40. Harbour Board started well, and at stumps had scored 1°" f° r 'he loss of two wickets. R. Stallworthy, 63, played splendid cricket.
