ELLERSLIE TRAINING

SMART SPRINTS RECORDED KARANGAPAI'S HALF-MILE RULING KING ALSO PLEASES BY ARCHER AVeather and track conditions were excellent for training operations at Ellerslie yesterday, when some interesting work was performed by candidates for the Takapuna Jockey Club's meeting. Smart sprints by Karangnpai and Ruling King were features of the work, but a number of other horses also recorded solid efforts. The course proper, where the flags were closer in than usual, being only '2oft. out, was available for galloping and the No. I grass and the tan were also in use.

On the course proper Ruling King (Williams) ran his first furlong in 12 2-5s and compleled half a mile in 50 3-ss. lie was carrying a fair weight mid did his work well. Ruling King should give a good account of himself in the Orewa Highweight Handicap to-morrow. Gay Broney was too good for Wee Pat ovor six furlongs in 1.20 -1-5. The first three furlongs were lun in 39 2-5s and Gay Broiiey stayed on solidly at the end. He is ah improving three-year-old who has benefited by recent racing and is likely to show some form at any time now. Glenhaupo and Demylus covered seven furlongs in 1.33 2-5, with little between them at the finish. Glenhaupo ran second in a high-weight handicap at Takapunain November, and, as she has been working quite as well lately as ehe was at that time, she may again have to be seriously reckoned with. Chief Cook Works Nicely Glenromney got a break on Wee Musk and the Lucullus—Country Air filly when they jumped oil at the half-mile post, but Wee Musk was practically on terms with him at the finish ill 52 l-ss. Courthaven was not bustled to run half a mile in 525. The filly ran a good race when she competed in the novice class at the spring meeting at Takapuna and may be a possibility to-morrow, although she is a long strider who v would be more at home on a bigger course. ■ Schizanthus led Chief Cook and Psychologist over the early stages of a five-furlongs gallop, running the first two in 255. but they were with her at the end in 1.3 1-5. Chief Cook was doing his work very well at the finish and Psychologist was also runninc on strongly. , On the No. 1 grass Brampton and Angie placed half a mile behind in 53 l-ss. and Neil worked over a round in 2.3 2-5. Karangapai. after running the first furlong in 12 2-ss, finished up half a mile attractively in -IS 4-ss. He is in great heart and should be a good prospect for the countxy meetings in the next few weeks. United pleased better than Golden Snahi over six furlongs in 1.38 3-5. the first three being run in 38 2-ss. These horses have both made good progress lately, but United will be all the better for a race or two. Broken Rule's Easy Six Hawthorn and Darina finished clear of Bright Flower at the end of five furlonus in 1.6 1-5. Hawthorn was going very comfortably and appears to be better now than at any time previously. On the tan Marching Song ran the last six furlongs of a round in 1,24 2-5,' and Landlubber was a shade better than Tahae Mea over "five furlongs in 1.5 4-5. Landlubber and Tahae Mea should both make showings in the Trial Stakes to-morrow, with the foimer probably the better prospect. Broken Rule, looking well, covered six furlongs easily in 1.?3 1-5. She seems to have thrived on her raoing at Trentham and should strip well for her Ferry Handicap engagement to-morrow. Wee Prinze, with Mahkill to assist over the last five furlongs, , covered a round in 1.57 1-5. Wee Prince ran the last seven furlongs in 1.35 1-5 and the last five in 1.5 4-5. It is some time since he displayed any form : n public, but he had only one run last season and had a fairly loner spell. His latest track efforts have been good enough to make him fv. possibility in highweight handicap class.

TAKANINI TRACK WORK MILE BY GREAT EMBLEM The weather was fine for training operations at Takanini yesterday and the tracks, although on the slow side, were in good order.. A fair amount of work was recorded on the inside grass, with the poles iiUny wide out. . . t Exaggeration (Taylor) beat Holly Lu (Jones) by a length over five furlongs in 1.5 2-5. Exaggeration, who is engaged at Takapuna on Monday, appears to have quite recovered from her hard races at Christmas. Holly Lu has recorded nothing exceptional lately, but no fault can be found with his condition. Gay Marigold (Moore) was a length and a-half in front of Mastfr Bnerly (Gilmer) at the end of six furlongs in 1.18 2-5. Gay Marigold worked freely throughout and Master Brierly. although beaten. was running on at the end. Both should be very hard to beat in their races to-morrow. Tironui (Busby) worked very well over fivo furlongs in 1.3 4-5. Tironui is the three-year-old Magpie—Linquair gelding . m it. Miller's' charge. He is to have his first race in the Trial Stakes to-morrow, and. although lacking in experience, is not withOU Greek P G C o l l 3 d (Taylor) and Gold Pocket (Gilmer) jumped off at the half-mile, but Gold Pocket was pulled up. at the turn owing to some trouble with his gear. Gteek Gold went on to record 52s for the distance. He now makes a decided noise when going fa 81 j Bu"le Call (Grice) was not ridden out to run a mile in 1.55 3-5. He looks an improved horse for his Taranaki' racing and is expected !o pay his way during the remainder of the season. . .
