THE WATERFRONT ROAD

SAVING OF £16,000

CITY TO RECEIVE HALF A saving of slightly over £16,000 has been made upon the construction of the waterfront road, which was completed for that amount less than the estimate of £317,000. of whichv the City Council was to provide £200,000 and the Government the .remainder. An arrangement whereby each parly is to benefit by 50 per cent of the saving was ratified b;y the City Council last evening. The Mayor, Mr. C. W. Hutchison, reported that while visiting Wellington in December he interviewed the Minister of Public Works regarding the balance due by the council to the Public Works Department on the conviction of the waterfront road.

Previously the council had been informed that the Minister had agreed tentatively to a rebate of £SOOO of the balance due by the council. As a result of these further negotiations, the Minister agreed that the council should receive the benefit of 50 per cent of the amount by which the work was conmleted under the estimated cost of £317.000.

At the date of the interview, this sav ing was stated to be £14,300, and the council's proportion £7150, but more re cent advices showed that the saving amounted to £16,198, and the council's proportion would therefore he £8099. These figures, however, might still bo subject to some further adjustment. The Mayor said the council's original proportion had been £200,000, and of this £186.498 had been paid, leaving a balance of £13,501. He recommended that the council should accept settlement on the basis an allowance of 50 per cent of the saving effected, and that payment be authorised of £5402 in settlement, subject to such adjustment as might be necessary in the event of the final amount of saving being further altered. The recommendation was adopted, the deputy-mayor, Mr. A. J. Entrican, congratulating the Mayor upon the success of his negotiations.
