A WOMAN MAYOR
DAUGHTER AS MAYORESS A FAMILY POSITION One of the most remarkable of modern developments in civic life has occurred at Bermondscy, S.E. London, where Mrs. E. George has been elected as Mayor and her 21-vear-old daughter is to take up the position of Mayoress. She, is engaged to be married, but at her mother's wish has postponed this event, as she lias also resigned her position in a Loudon city office. " She is not going to be married yet," Mrs. George told a reporter. " Constance will help me to open bazaars and sales of work, kiss babies and do all the. other jobs that fall to the lot of a Mayoress when business Middiebrough is another borough which has placed a woman at the head of civic affairs. This is Miss C. Brown. She had the misfortune to slip and fall as the Mayoral procession was entering the council chamber. She recovered after receiving attention, but is not at all likely to slip in those shady places of civic politic.s where man is sometimes betrayed from the hard road of thrifty finance; for women have been so long the controllers of meagre expenditure that their influence should be invaluable at the present juncture.
