QUINNAT SALMON
FISH IN LAKE COLERIDGE
INCREASE IN NUMBERS GOOD SPORT PREDICTED Excllent sport with quinnat salmon in coming seasons is to bo expected by anglers who visit Lako Coleridge, according to a report presented to the Council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society last week. Tho fish have established a firm hold in tho lake, and, unless they deteriorate, should do well. Tho report stated that quinnat salmon wero present in largely-increased numbers in tho lake, and it would appear that an annual stocking took placo from tho Harper River, fish of from lib. to 81b. being abundant. Occasionally the fish weighed up to 101b. They wero in good condition, and readily took an artificial bait, the principal bait being spoon and Devon. The popular method was a short casting rod with a quick willing reel, and tho fish were usually taken at a fair depth. The Peak Hills side of the lako appeared to be more thickly populated with salmon than any other, and the best catches that had been reportod at the Harper end, bags of from 20 to 30 for two rods over a. week-end being tho rule rather than tho exception. Thoso fish had also been taken on a large fly.
Some fine specimens of rainbow trout, ranging up to 101b. in weight, had been taken in Lako Coleridge this year. Ihe majority of the fish average about 61b. One weighing about lljlb. was taken. They rea'dily took a big fly, and were taken also on tho spoon and phantom. Indications were that brown trout were not very numerous. One specimen weighing 101b. and another 61b. were in excellent .ondition. There was no record of Atlantic salmon having been taken this year.
