BAKING TRADE DISPUTE
STRIKE THREAT REMAINS
NO FRESH PROPOSALS AGREEMENT IN TWO CASES Tile threat by members of tho Auckland Operative Bakers and Pastrycooks' Union to cease work to-morrow evening if proposals submitted to employers are not accepted still remains. Ihe employees proposals seok to maintain rates of pay nearer tho award payment, less the 10 per cent cut which has operated since 1931, whereas tho employers suggested more drastic conditions.
The bakers employed by Kent's, Limited, who last week ceased work as u protest against the employers' proposals, will resume work this evening, an agreement having now been reached. No difficulty is expected to be experienced by Walter Buchanan, Limited, tho alternative proposals having been tentatively accepted by tho employers. "We do not want to go on strike, especially in view of tho fact that Monday is a holiday, but unless other employers consent to our offer, which has reached absolute bedrock, the union will have no option," said tho secretary, Mr. E. J. Watson, last evening. At a special meeting of the union last evening, expected modified proposals by tho employers were not forthcoming. Members of tho Auckland Master Bakers' Association met yesterday, but it was stated afterward that thero wero no fresh conditions to submit to tho union. At last evoning's meeting, members of the union merely confirmed the decision reached at tho week-end to cease work in cases whero tho alternative proposals wero not accepted. A further attempt to reach finality in other instances will be made by the union to-day.
