MATAMATA MEETING

EVENTS FOR FEBRUARY; 4 DECLARATION OF WEIGHTS TEELS TOP IN HACK CUP The following handicaps for the Matamata Racing Club's meeting on February 4 have been declared by Mr. F. J. McManemin:—

SYDNEY TURF ITEMS RUNNERS AT WARWICK FARM VICTORIA PARK MEETING [from our own correspondent] SYDNEY. Jan. 39 The seven-furlong open handicap at Warwick Farm o n Saturday was a most peculiar race. At the finish Tom Pinch and Maybe were fight ins out a desperate duel and just v.-hen Maybe apparently had t,he race won he suddenly ran out to the outside rails, missing a place entirely and leaving the race to Tom Pinch. Then' immediately the horses came back a protest was lodged by the rider of the second horse, Loch Garry, against Tom Pinch. It was discovered this was for interference just after the start, and the stewards took a long time to deliberate but eventually the placing stood. P. Riddlo supplied a, fancied candidate, Motor, for the mile maiden handicap at Warwick Farm, but a moderate third place was his best. An unplaced runner was Chief Barter, a four-year-old filly by Chief Ruler from Commerce.

' Gesto is showing a flash of his old-time form on Sydney courses. The chestnut is on the light side but has run some creditable races lately. Gesto is getting into the sere and yellow, but with weak class contesting the middle-distance handicaps at present ho may again prove successful.

Janie McNish, the filly about whose age a doubt was raised a few weeks ago, was an acceptor for the six furlongs welter at Warwick Farm. The stewards decided not to permit her to start, however, for their report of their inquiry was not considered at the time by the A.J.C. Committee, which met yesterday. Registered mixed horse and pony racing commenced at Victoria Park on Wednesday, when n ten-event programme was provided. Notable performers, Veilmond and Holdfast, were among the acceptors, but they were purely complimentary nominations. However, the Villiers Stakes winner. Magnetic, scored in the principal handicap and Labour Girl won the first division of the Flying Handicap. Allowing for a liberal distribution of free tickets the attendance was much belter than at any Wednesday meeting for a long time, the Leger enclosure, where there is no free-list, being well filled. The result of the racing showed that the old A.R.C.. horses and men are going to have a hard row to hoe, for although in meinbors they dominated the lists half the races were won by horses from the A.J.C. ranks. The first divisio-i of the 14.2 handicap was won by Care Free, who scored her first success. She is n. daughter of Magpie and Vulicare, trained by Bailey Pay ten for the A.J.C. committeeman, Mr. P. ii. Osborne, She is not a model at the barrier but survived getting away badly and colliding with another starter by winning very decesively. As she is a Newmarket Handicap entrant it was not surprising that she was backed with confidence. Greenawny, making her second appearanco in Sydney, scored a very easy win in the mile welter handicap with 8.11. Greenaway is one of the late Mr. G. D. Greenwood's horses, by Sutala from Grcenstreet. Out of; the ten races seven were won by A.J.C. riders. In every detail the meeting was run on A..T.C. lines and it was evident that the management desires to make a clenn break from the old order.
