EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD NATIVE POLICY CRITICISED The following ire extracts from the. New Zealand Herald of January 25, 1883: At a meeting o: the Colonial Institute in London on January 23 a paper by Sir William Fox, on New Zealand affairs, was , read. It deplored the impolicy of the promises made to the Maoris by the Treaty of Waitangi and entered at length on the native''que stion from the foundation of the dolphy to the present time. The paper justified the confiscation of native lands as a punishment for rebellionand as a necessary security for life and the preservation of peace. Commenting on the candidature of Bishop Moran, of Dunedin, for the Peninsula seat, the Southland Times, in an article on the Peninsula election contest, says:—"Some cu.iositv may reasonably be excited as to the effect-of a bishop 3presence on the somewhat obstreperous spirits of the Lowor House. .Will Mr.' Pish restrain his Billingsgate and Mr. Bracken deny himself and the House the relaxation of a comic song, overawed by the episcopal eye that will be upon them. What will be the effect of Johnny Sheehan's confession of educational faith when face to fact witli-ia right reverend father of the Church?" Gustave Dore, the celebrated French artist, is dead. His principal paintings., embrace a number of Scriptural subjects and form a valuable collection. His best and greatest work is the painting representing Christ leaving the Praetonum.
