GENERAL SPORTS NEWS

AUSTRALIA'S BUSY YEAR DOMINION CRICKET TEAM VISIT FROM TENNIS PLAYERS Tlio current year will bo a particularly busy one for .Australia in sport. Lawn tennis, athletic and swimming teams are to visit Auckland within the next two months and, later on, the Australian Rugby team will tour South Africa, the League team will visit England and the Davis Cup team will tour abroad.

A correspondent, ''St. John's Wood." has written suggesting the following team to represent New Zealand in the test matches against the English team now in Australia: —G. L. Weir, H. G. Vivian, J. E. Mills, D. R. Garrard (Auckland), C. S. Dempster, K. C. James, J, Newman (Wellington), M L. Page, J. L. Kerr (Canterbury), F. T. Badcock, J. A. Dun. ning (Otago).

In view of the inter-university tournament to be held in Auckland at Easter, members of the Auckland University Rowing Club are now training for selection in the Auckland eight. Two trial crews have been picked and thev will race on an evening convenient to the Auckland clubs next week The selector and club captain, Mr. J. K. Hunn, will pick the crew on that performance.

The presence of several players from outside the province, as well as many from the various Eub-associations in the provincial area, will add greatly to the interest taken in the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's annual championships, which commence at the Stanley Street courts today. Among the Wellington players are C. E. Malfroy, runner-up in the recentNew Zealand championship singles, N. R. C. Wilson and Mrs. W. J. Melody. T. Rhodes-Williams will be the sole Canterbury representative.

The Auckland Lawn Tennis Association has been for the visit of an Australian team during the present season and it is now practically certain that Dunlop and Moon will arrive on February 14 and, apart from playing in Auckland, will tour through the provincial sub-associations, r playing matches where these can be arranged. A big effort was made, to obtain McGrath, but, owing to his inclusion in the Davi? Cup team and the possibility of a trip to Japan, it is scarcely likely lie will be available for the visit to Auckland.

The suggested formation of a swimming club at Otahuhu is now taking definite shape. The committee appointed to consider the question and bring forward definite proposals met recently and reported excellent progress. A meeting of all interested in the sport of swimminj is to be held on 'Wednesday next. A large attendance of parents, who will give the movo ment their active support, is anticipated Oathuku is somewhat lacking in connection with swimming certificates for school children and, should sufficient support be forthcoming for the formation of the club, an educational instructor will, no doubt, be appointed to give juveniles their first lessons in the art.

The New Zealand Cricket Council has asked Mr. T. W. Reese to bring up to date his second edition of " New Zealand Cricket." Mr. Reese spent many months collecting dato for his first edition, which covered the history of the game in all parts of the Dominion from its commencement up to the war period. The result was a most valuable publication, but, unfortunately, the author was a good deal out of pocket for his trouble. The action of the council, therefore, in bearing the exponse on this occasion, in order to bring the history up to date, is a most commendable one. It is interesting to note that the Australian Board of Control is taking similar action in connection with the game over there.

W. 8., Te Puke, writes:—"l would be extremely thankful if you could let me know, per medium of your sports column in Wednesday's Herald, about the following service in tennis: (a) In what way does the American service differ from the ordinary cut service executed when the ball is thrown directly in front of the player? (b) In tho American service is the ball thrown to the left to be struck ?—There are two American services, both having a break delivery. The first is hit from left to right and thj& ball is thrown high over the left shoulder and forward. In the reverse American service the ball is thrown more to the right and is hit from right to left. Both these serves have high bounding breaks in different directions.—Athletic Editor.

Several members of tlie Auckland and Wellington cricket teams, which took part in the t'lunket Shield match at Eden Park, have won names for themselves in other branches of sport. In the Auckland side, Weir, Matheson, Bush and Pearson have also represented Auckland at Rugby, while Bush has also won All Black honours. Vivian was a half-back of promise when he was at Mount Albert Grammar School, but he now plays golf during the winter months. Dacre has represented New Zealand and Auckland at Association football, as well as cricket. In the Wellington team Parsloe, Lamason and Tindill are noted Rugby players. If Bush were selected to play for New Zealand against the English cricketers later in the season, he would be the fourth player to represent New Zealand both at cricket and Rugby. M. L. Page, C. J. Oliver and G. R. Dickinson are the only other double All Blacks.
