HORTICULTURAL AFFAIRS
GATHERING AT WELLINGTON CONFERENCES BEING HELD [BY TELEGRAni —PKESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Tuesday Representatives of various associations which have some branch of horticulture as their main interest are at present gathered in Wellington for the National Flower Show on Thursday and Friday next and to jjold conferences and annual
meetings. A civic welcome was extended this rooming by Mr. Meadowcroft in the absence of the Mayor, and the conference proceedings were officially opened by the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. C. E. MacmilJan, who assured those present that the various associations could rely on his and the department's support. The question of protecting the hybridist was raised by Mr. J. A. .Campbell at a meeting of the Horticultural Trades' Association. He said that at present the Trades Mark Act could be invoked, but that did not prevent.a grower from selling the same ■plant under another name. A nomenclature board should be set up, and it should be made a penal offence to sell any plant under any name except that authorised by the board. The matter had been considered by the Government, which declined to incur the expense of setting up a board. If the horticultural bodies guaranteed the small cost of such a board and relieved the Government of liability, something might be done.
It was stated during the meeting that the presentation by the State of forest trees to local bodies was unfair to nurserymen, who were left with stocks on their hands which had to bo destroyed.
