TAUPIRI SWAMP
DRAINAGE WORK TO START SEVERAL TENDERS RECEIVED [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Monday A development in connection with the drainage of the Taupiri Swamp has been the calling of tenders by the Public Works Department for the deepening and widening of the Paranui Drain for a distance of five miles nine chains. The work is being let in five different contracts. Numerous tenders have been received and have been forwarded to the Tenders Board, Wellington. The deepening of the Paranui Drain, which runs into the upper reaches of the Mangawara River near the OhinewaiTahuna road, is part of the comprehensive scheme to drain the whole of the swamp 'and is a continuation of the improvements carried out in the Mangawara River by the Mangawara River Board some years ago. Several other drains have been surveyed by the department in the Taupiri drainage area, and tenders for these sections are expected to be called shortly. The Taupiri Drainage Board, which has replaced the Mangawara River Board, is required to find £IO,OOO toward the cost of the complete scheme, which is estimated to absorb £BO,OOO.
