ONEHUNGA INTERESTS
DECISIONS OF COUNCIL GEDDES BASIN TREATMENT In response to a request from the Kaiapoi Borough Council that the Minister of Finance be urged to bring about a reduction of bank interest rates, the Onehunga Borough Council, at its meeting last evening, decided, contrary to the advice of the Mayor, to support the proposal. A letter from the Onehunga-Manukau Chamber of Commerce asked the council to obtain estimates of the cost of forming the Geddes Basin into a sports ground and also the cost of providing floodgates and retaining sea water in the area. The letter was received without comment. The Manukau Rugby Football League asked for the use of three playing areas on the recreation reserve, and was granted the two grounds set aside for League players three years ago. Tho council supported a request by the Auckland Metropolitan Agricultural and Pastoral Association to have Allium Oleraceum, or "flowering onion," declared a noxious weed. The association stated that this weed was rapidly spreading in farm pastures. An invitation was accepted from the Mount Roskill Road Board to play friendly cricket and b.owling matches.
