SCHOOLBOYS RETURN

TOUR IN AUSTRALIA

MANY PLACES VISITED AUSTRALIANS MUCH IMPRESSED The party of New Zealand secondary schoolboys, who left Auckland by the Marama on December 23 to tour Australia, returned yesterday by the Monowai. All the lads looked remarkably well and were in high spirits. They cheered lustily as (he ship drew in to her berth. The tour was completed without illness or any other misfortune and, according to one of the masters who accompanied the party, many of the lads had grown and put on weight. The party was organised and conducted by Mr. T. A. Lappin, who organised the first tour held a year ago. Associated with him were Mr. J. F. Ilussell, of the Auckland Grammar School, and Mr, T. A. Blyth, of the Ohakune High School. The lads, who numbered 36, represented 20 schools throughout New Zealand, and varied in ago from 14 to 19 years. They paid their own expenses. It was stated that the tour, which was both educational and recreational, had broadened the boys' minds immeasurably. They had greatly impressed the Australian people with their fine physique, bearing and conduct, upon which they had been complimented in every place they visited. The itinerary of the tour was wide and varied. The lads witnessed the second cricket test match at Melbourne, and while in that city marched to the Cenotaph and deposited a wreath. Their excellent marching was impressive and caused much comment. A similar tribute was paid by them when in Sydney. A number of factories were visited by the party in-and around Sydney, and the boys were also the guests of the management at the steelworks at Newcastle. Uiey visited the Taronga Zoo and were entertained at a number of theatres, and the commercial travellers of Sydney provided a luncheon in their honour. Twelve days were spent at Manly, where tho lads enjoyed themselves in the surf. Ballarat, the Jcnolan Caves and Katoomba were visited, tho lads being tendered a civic reception .at the latter place. They also paid a visit to Canberra, being conducted over the Federal Parliament Buildings and tho Cotter dam at the hydro-electric works.
