THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE ~ FIRMER TONE APPARENT Operations on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday again reflected an improvement in buying strength, the movement being most marked in Government securities. Three issues of State loans had sale at higher values and offers for the 1938 and 1939 4j per cent stock and bonds were advanced by from 5s to 10s. For 1939 per cent bonds and 1938 and 1939 4J, per cent stock, buyers wore willing to pay 10s higher at £94 10s and offers 5s higher at £94 5s were made for 1938 4j per cent bonds. There was <b sale in 1939 4£ per cent bonds 10s higher at £95. Th» 1937 per cent issues were again sought at £IOO and there were two sales of the February stock £1 higher at £IOO ss. These were the first transactions in the issue this year. The 1936 5j per cent bonds also changed hands at £IOO ss, registering a similar advance.
Levels in Rank of New Zealands receded slightly and a parcel was released 2£d lower at 42s 4£d. Other bank issues were a shade firmer. Commercials were quoted 2d higher at 14s 5d and New South Wales were sought 5s higher at £26 ss. The insurance market was inactive and levels were unchanged. Some of the miscellaneous issues were transferred on a higher basis. Devonport Ferry was taken at 18s 3d, an advance of 3d, and Kauri Timbers changed hands 6d higher at 10s 9d. Offers for New Zealand and Tooth's Breweries moved forward and a parcel of the former was accepted at 265, a rise of 6d. Colonial Sugars were sought 10s higher at £47, holders responding with a quotation at £4B ss. Wilsons Cements were available 3d lower at 27s and a lot was placed unchanged at 26s 9d. In the unlisted stocks, New Zealand Newspapers again sold at 20s. . The mining market was active, sales being completed in Waihis Id higher at 18s lOd and in Waihi Grand Junctions unchanged at 3s 2d. King Solomons were released twice Id lower at 2s 3d, and Golden Dawns were taken unchanged at 4s 6d.
