"Deceased, in company with two other miners, set out on foot from Greymouth recently in search of work. One of the party secured work at Hikurangi, and the others, who were also expectant of obtaining employment, arrived at Awanui yesterday. The men went bathing this afternoon in the Awanui River, in the vicinity of tho old limeworks. They secured a canvas canoe and paddled into mid-river. The boat suddenly capsized and tho occupants were thrown into the water. Deceased, who was unable to swim, was assisted by his companion, who, however, became exhausted and had to release his hold. He just managed to struggle to tho shore and call for assistance. Mr. Brunton, who was in tho vicinity, immediately dived into the river, and, after a second attempt, recovered the body. Constables M. Thornell and E. Buckley, of Kaitaiil, and Dr. Clarke, of Pukepoto, were summoned, and artificial respiration was applied without, avail. An inquest will be held to-morrow.
