RACING RIDER'S ESCAPE
COLLAPSE OF FRONT TYRE SKILL PREVENTS INJURY A remarkable escape from a sever# crash when the front tyre of his motorcycle came off at high speed \vas experiienced by SI. Aicken, a local racing motor.cyclist, while practising at Henning's Speedway, Mangere, on Saturday afternoon. Only the exercise of exceptional skill and presence of mind saved Aick«n from almost certain injury. Using his cinder-track machine, Aickei. had done several laps and was travelling between 60 and 70 miles an hour whet the cycle went into a wobble just after entering the front straight. The front' tyre was seen to detach itself from the. wheel, while the tube, which became entangled in the spokes, was cut in small pieces. Fortunately the tyre did not jam in the forks, but continued to revolvo, allowing the rider a chance to stop
safely. . . Under the circumstances, to apply the brakes would have been inviting disaster,' but Aicken did not do so. He closed ffcs throttle gradually, and fought the machine for well over 100 yards befoia bringing it to rest. The rim of the frnrti wheel was battered, but otherwise no damage was caused. •
