"WOMEN'S WORST YEAR"
EXAMINATION FAILURES Women still want to be income tax collectors in Britain and are still entering the examinations to qualify for the posts, states a writer in an English paper. But this year they have done worse than they have ever done before. Eighty-eight women competed at the examination; they captured only seven of the forty vacancies. That is, roughly, one woman in every twelve was successful. 1o win the other thirty-three vacancies, 287 men entered. That is, roughly, one man in every eight was successful. More women entered this year than ever before. Usually the women carry off the same proportion of vacancies as the men. Last year, when seventy-two • women entered. Miss A. Jennings won first place. This is not the end of the story of this women's worst year. They won only three of the fifty executive posts offered. Women, nevertheless, score high in the viva voce examination, to test peisonal fitness. And the position of inspector of taxes is onerous. Somerset House has added courage to the qualities necessary. That is not mentioned in the qualities requisite for the Army, Navy, or Air Force.
