TAXES IN AUSTRALIA
SEVERE RAID ON INCOME CHOPPED AT BOTH ENDS There was indignant protest recently by Mr. Yarwood, one of the oldest and foremost of the accountants of Sydney, against the harassing of tourists so that some, hearing of the taxation law, would not leave their ships when they arrived in Sydney Harbour. Another leading citizen, while supporting the protest against this attack upon a possible source of benefit to Australia, expresses his opinion of iniquitous taxation conditions affecting many more. The citizen points out that persons residing in New "South Wales who receive their income, or part of it, from other places have to pay unemployment relief tax of Is in the pound on all of it, even if the whole be derived from outside Australia, and if it has already paid tax in the country of origin. He says that i;e has known of persons who came to Australia from-other parts of the world, and, being charmed by Australia, decided to remain. 13ut when they found that their income was chopped at both ei)ds they left at once. Each succeeding Ministry in New South Wales rejoices in establishing a record for the number of bills passed. It is hardly surprising in the circumstances that in the city bitter remarks are heard to the effect that Parliament would earn higher esteem if quality, not quantity, were the aim. Some mitigation of scandalous injustices in taxation would be welcomed.
