PREPARATION OF WOOL
Sir.—Mr. Smith says I have "wandered away from the subject." Perhaps I have a little, but if Mr. Smith remembers the "half an hoar I gave him one lunch-time last week /he will recollect that there is more in the argument than Appears in the Herald. It is only fair to all interested on both sides that all the "cards" should be placed on the table. Then the question of better preparation would be understood in its true light. It is understood, in business that the better the display of an article the better is the chance of selling ; it and getting full value, and that is why I agreed with Mr. Smith in my letter | of December 16, but pointed out that it would be "more profitable and less costly" j to sell tfyfe wool "natural." I also pointed out that it would be better if the farmer had his wool classified before it left his I station. This could be easily done and the" I woolgrower would reap the benefit if he fixed a good bench in his woolshed and I went through every fleece (as they do in England before the broker comes round to make an offer), and then baled the wool s uniformly, just trimmed a little to give : a good appearance. What would be gained by this m6thod would more than compensate for the loss on the bits of stained- wool | or inferior that could be baled and sold | at a low-price. It would not be necessary j to mark the quality, as' what one might consider 46's, another might call 44's | cr 48's, so long as it was tidy. I still maintain that up to 64's could be produced in the North Island and have seen j some good specimen sheep at the Auckland Show. It is riot what my Bradford friends j appreciate that I ain concerned about; it 'j is purely the position of the woolgrowers 1 in the Auckland province that I prefer j to consider, as I know that their pros- % perity is my prosperity. Charles Laycock.
