WORKERS' EDUCATION
PAERATA SUMMER SCHOOL Four lectures were given at the Workers' Educational Association's summer school at Paerata yesterday. "The revolt against authority is the most notable trend in modern novel writing," said Professor von Zedlitz, of Wellington, speaking of the new spirit of the novel. He illustrated his remarks by references to war books by C. E. Montague, Barluisse and E. M. Remarque, and to recent works by James Joyce and D. H. Lawrence. "James Joyce holds an outstanding place in English, literature," the lecturer caid. The third of a series of lectures on modern Germany was given by Mr. J. O. Shearer, of Hamilton, on "The War, and the Revolution." He traced the development of the war on the Western front and the effect of the collapse of Germany on the nation. He also reviewed the revolution and the civil war of 1919.
A lecture on economics was given in evening by Professor A. G. B. Fisher, of Otago University. He said the wholesale price index number should be modified as the efficiency of production altered. Mr. Owen Jensen spoke on "What Music Owes to Germany." A tennis tournament was played in the afternoon and other sports were enjoyed.
