THE STREAM OF CHARITY
Perhaps the secretary of a certain charitable institution in Invercargill has now learned the wisdom of the axiom "never divert the stream of charity." A short time ago he issued a circular appeal for contributions to the institution, which is a, deserving one and has encountered difficult times lately. The staff of a commercial house received the circular and organised a subscription which raised half a guinea, quite a fair sum in view of the frequent requests received. The half-guinea was duly forwarded to the secretary of the institution, but to the surprise of the contributors it was returned with a letter expressing indignation at so meagre a donation, which was deemed by him to be not so worthy as the "widow's mite." The letter was naturally received with some surprise, but the staff, having* had their gift scorned, decided to divert it to more selfish purposes and sent for a ticket in a well-known overseas "consultation." The nom-de-plume used was " —' s Mistake," being the name of the secretary who returned their half-guinea.
