A milestone in the progress of Waihi Beach as a summer seaside resort was reached on Saturday evening, when the Major o! Waihi, Mr, W. M- Wall mitt, officially turned on the electric power in the presence of over 2COO people, including many visitors from other districts. Elaborate preparations had been made for the occasion by the Thames Valley Power Board, which was responsible for the reticulation cf the area, and when the Mavor turned a kev the township area was* flooded with light, the effect being heightened by festoons of coloured bulbs extending from end to end of Main Street. In his address, Mr. Wallnutt said that the beach could be regarded not only as an asset to Waihi and its people, but a.a national asset. As a summer holiday and health resort it was second to none in the Auckland Province and was destined to become the playground of the Waikato district. Manv people from farther afcekl would also spend their summer vacations there. Other speakers included Mr. W. Marshall, Mayor of Paeroa, Mr. T. Maunder, president of the Waihi Beach Improvement Society, and Mr. A. C. Arthur, deputy-chairman of the Thames valley Power Board.
